Langoustines for lunch A wee dram

Plenty to see & do...

There are so many things to see and do in the area that it is difficult to list them all! However, here are a few of our favourites:

  • Have a picnic on the seashore seconds away from the house
  • Follow the National Trust for Scotland coastal walk which starts at our front door, finishing in Drumbuie. There is a good spot to fish from on the way called Fisherman’s Rock.
  • Walking to the Crags above Plockton – only 45 minutes and an amazing view.
  • Have a swim along the road in Kyle - Lochalsh Leisure Centre
  • Visit Applecross - drive over the Bealach na Ba – the highest single track road in the UK – a real adventure and there is excellent food at the Applecross Inn
  • Explore the spectacular walks in Kintail and Torridon.
  • Skye has a lot to offer - even the trip over the bridge is fun. Walk the Quiriang on Skye – and then have well-deserved afternoon tea and cakes at the Flodigarry Hotel.
  • Elgol on Skye is a nice drive and on a good day affords amazing views of the Cuillins and the Islands of Eigg and Rhum. You can also take a boat trip from Elgol - bellajane.co.uk, mistyisleboattrips.co.uk
  • Neist Point lighthouse is a bit of a trek but worth it to reach the westerly-most point on Skye. This which looks out over the Minch to islands of Harris, the Uists and Benbecula.
  • Sea kayaking with seakayakplockton.co.uk
  • Nigel Grounds is a great local artist based on Skye lots of amazing paintings and prints Nigel Ground - there is a winter painting of the house on the gallery page.
  • Eilean Donan Castle is beautiful and only 15 minutes from Barley port. View castle webcam.
  • Bring your own boat big or small – we have a boat mooring which will accommodate a 45 foot yacht! The coastline around Rowan Bank is hard to beat – a coral island is very close to the village and is our favourite place for a barbeque. If you plan to come with a boat let us know and we will divulge its secret location!
  • Just relax on the decking with a drink and watch the wildlife.
  • Treat yourself to some local delicacies - Buth-Bheag is a ‘wee’ seafood bar in Kyle (5 minutes away) great little place and lovely owners – take a look at their facebook page
  • Take the train to Plockton. It is a request stop so you need to raise your hand so the train driver knows to stop!!  Brilliant fun and the station is a very short and lovely stroll from the village.  Fun way to arrive in Plockton for lunch.  For the retrun leg you need to ask the conductor to stop at Duirinish or the train wont stop for you.The trainline.com is as good way to check train time
  • Our favourite seafood restaurant is the Lochbay Seafood restaurant .  Perfect seafood and lovely location (about 1 hour 45 minutes from Barley Port) expensive but worth it for a treat.
  • Amazing local food: Book well ahead as all are very busy! The Plockton Inn - Plockton Hotel - Plockton Shores - There is a Chinese takeaway in Kyle, a couple of Indian Takeaways and a fish and chip shop.
the house is super...my 2 sons spent nearly all week at the water, one swimming and fishing, the other collecting shells and crabs.
